CASE 1
→ Is Canada's History of Readily Welcoming Refugees Truth or Myth?

"Canada has always been a country that is open and welcoming and aware of our responsibilities on the world stage to ensure that everyone around the world has a chance."     Justin Trudeau 2015

The past several years have seen the Syrian crisis dominate the national discussion on refugees.  And many of those advocating for Canada to do more to help, point to a longstanding Canadian tradition of helping, and welcoming, refugees.

But the question we are asking is → what's reality and what's myth when it comes to Canada's history with immigration and refugees?

TASK

INDIVIDUAL

Listen to the podcast on the left side of these instructions titled, Canada's history of welcoming refugees, a reality or myth? (CBC The Current 07 September 2015).

As you listen, fill in the T-CHART Handout by noting examples of Canada welcoming refugees in the past and examples when Canada did not welcome refugees.

In your T-Chart, note the name of the guest expert, the name and origin of the refugee group being discussed and the year(s) when that refugee issue occurred.

QUESTION

What are 2 lessons that come from this article that are instructive when looking at Canada's current role in Syria & Iraq?  Directly quote article content to support each lesson.

Canada's Current Peace Operation: Peacemaking Mission in Iraq & Syria

Syria is a complex ethnic & religious country.  The roots of the current conflict are long & deep and at its source is betrayal, religion, empire, and war.

Syria was a strategically important cross-roads between Europe and Asia.  Syria was an artery of global trade and with wealth came the desire of many empires to dominate and control the region, including, the Egyptians, Assyrians, Alexander the Great, Romans, Caliphs, Mongols, Ottomans, British, and the French.
